What Happens During a Root Canal?

Root canals require efficiency and precision to ensure all unhealthy bacteria are removed from the innermost layer of the tooth. To accomplish this, Dr. Cannady begins by anesthetizing the tooth and its surrounding area.

Once it’s isolated with a dental dam, specialized instruments are used to enter through a small opening in the crown. Dr. Cannady will then clean out the diseased canals and pulp chamber, removing all remnants of bacteria, infection, and the pulp. When finished, he will sanitize the tooth and fill it with gutta-percha. This biocompatible solution replaces the pulp, providing additional support to the structure.

The last step is to place a custom-made dental crown over the tooth, which will be crafted and secured into place a week later. This protective cap will serve as a safeguard to prevent reinfection and possible damage while also allowing you to use your tooth normally.
